Episode 5 of Obi-Wan Kenobi surprised fans with the appearance of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. How was this sequence from the past envisioned in the Star Wars series? Warning, spoilers.
Warning, spoilers. We strongly advise you to watch the fifth episode of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, available on Disney+, before continuing to read this article.
The fifth and penultimate episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, full of inspiration, delighted fans with epic scenes from Darth Vader but also the flashback sequence that permeated the episode. And this scene lived up to expectations because it was an exchange between Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen).
We see the training of Master and Padawan in lightsaber combat in a very practical and controlled sequence, like the ones we are accustomed to the actors in the intro, which are about Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, but before the Clone Wars, if we refer to the haircuts of the two heroes.
When Attack of the Clones was released 20 years ago, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen were 31 and 21 years old, respectively. They are now 51 and 41 years old. For consistency, the two wore costumes and haircuts similar to those they had at the time. It also seems inevitable that they will have a small digital retouching on their faces as can be seen in the close-ups.
A slight (very?)
But it is interesting to note that this numerical renewal (Technique “de-aging”, in English) is very light, considering the fact that Hayden Christensen hasn’t aged much. The Star Wars teams seem to have learned their lesson from the failed and mocked digital renewal of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in Season 2 of The Mandalorian.
Since the redaction is so light, we can still see some distinct features on Hayden Christensen’s face, which don’t pollute the flashback scene in question since fans immediately realized it was a scene from the past. But not everyone supports this view. Although fans are happy with this long-awaited streak, some believe that Anakin Skywalker’s digital renewal was not successful and even does not exist.
Some point to the fact that Disney and Lucasfilm are “lazy” and several YouTubers themselves have recreated the scene from Episode 5 in question with the entire “de-aging”, which is much closer to the young face than Hayden Christensen wore during the Attack of the Age of Clones, as it is Explained in this video below.
But others are very happy that they chose not to abuse the special effects and digital rejuvenation in this sequence. This allows the magic of the reunion between Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to work and not betray their emotions in this nostalgic sequence.
What do you think ?
